- stars
- In the ancient world of the Near East and in Graeco-Roman societies stars were held to be supernatural beings, and astrologers flourished, as in Babylonia (Isa. 47:13). Astrology was rejected by prophets (Jer. 10:2) as an unhealthy foreign influence. When it appeared it was condemned, e.g. by Amos (5:26) and suppressed by King Josiah (2 Kgs. 23:4–14); it had been introduced during the reign of Manasseh (687–642 BCE, 2 Kgs. 21:3–5).
